Women Empowerment Through Literacy

About the Department

The Department of Assamese was established in 1992, coinciding with the foundation of Moran Mahila Mahavidyalaya. In 1994, just two years after its inception, the department launched its major course offerings. Today, the department provides Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) programs, both Major and Minor, within the Four-Year Undergraduate Programmes (FYUGP) framework as outlined by the National Education Policy (NEP). The department currently supports a designated seat capacity of 100 students.

Staffed by four full-time, highly experienced faculty members, the department boasts an exemplary academic track record, consistently producing graduates who excel in various academic and professional arenas. The department publishes a wall magazine named "Abhigyan" and an annual printed magazine titled "Jatra," which offers students a platform to showcase their literary talents. Additionally, the department has compiled and published "Sameekhan," a collection of research papers authored by former students.

Vision and Mission

Assamese, with its rich literary heritage spanning nearly a thousand years, is recognized as a classical language of India. It serves as the primary medium of communication for the people of Assam and is utilized as the language of instruction in government academic institutions throughout the region. As a Modern Indian Language, Assamese is mandated as a compulsory subject for all students.

The primary objective of the Department of Assamese is to introduce students to the diverse languages and dialects of Assam, and to explore Assamese literature and its interplay with society. The department endeavors to foster an aesthetic appreciation among students and to encourage the practice of creative writing. To this end, the department organizes symposiums, field trips, workshops, and other educational activities. Plans are also underway to establish a dedicated magazine library in the near future. Above all, the department is committed to motivating students to develop into well-rounded and ethically grounded individuals.
