Women Empowerment Through Literacy

College History

Moran Mahila Mahavidyalaya was established on July 8, 1992 with a noble purpose to cater to the educational aspirations of the region's socially disadvantaged female population. This premiere institute of higher education is the outcome of the pioneering effort of ‘Ratnagarbha’ Dr.Sukha Baruah (Founder Principal), Binanda Boruah, Dr. Pradip Hazarika, Dr. Kamala Borgohain, Arun Kumar Saikia, Hadi Mustaque Hussain, Dr. Anil Saikia, Dr. Jatin Chutia and a host of community members. Along with them the then Union Deputy  Minister of Health Paban Singh Ghatowar, State Education Minister Sarat Borkotoky, MLA of Mahmora Constituency Lakhi Prasad Borgohain and MLA of Moran Constituency Joychandra Nagbangshi also actively collaborated in the establishment of the College.

Nestled in the predominantly rural enclave of Moran in the historic Charaideo district - the erstwhile capital of the illustrious Ahom Kingdom - the institution has stood as an enduring beacon of enlightenment and empowerment since its inception. The Charaideo district, known for being the convergence point of the states of Assam, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, and marking a unique geographical and cultural crossroads, where the diverse traditions, languages, and landscapes of the three states meet and blend, adds to the college's unique cultural and geographical significance. The district is also distinguished by the presence of the ‘Moidams’, monumental structures, originally the burial mounds of the Ahom Kings, Queens and Nobles, which are often compared to the pyramids of Egypt for their historical and architectural grandeur. These Moidams have been officially declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2024, placing it as India’s 43rd  and Assam’s 3rd World Heritage Site.

The college is dedicated to the upliftment of higher education for young women from the surrounding ethnic and linguistic backgrounds  as well as from every nook and cranny of the region and nearby districts and states, irrespective of social class and economic standing. It endeavors to empower its students to forge meaningful, self-reliant lives beyond mere subsistence.

The college holds affiliation with Dibrugarh University and garnered recognition under sections 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act on January 29, 1999, and February 4, 2010, respectively. These prestigious recognitions stand as a testament to the institution's unwavering commitment to academic excellence and adherence to rigorous educational standards. On January 1, 2013, the institution was provincialised by the Government of Assam under the Provincialisation of Services Act, 2011, securing sustainable support and integration into the state's educational framework. Underscoring its steadfast dedication to high standards of education and social values, the college achieved NAAC 'B' accreditation (CGPA 2.34) in 2021. This accreditation not only affirms the quality of instruction and holistic development provided by the college but also its pivotal role in nurturing a vibrant academic milieu that fosters ethical conduct, community service, and exemplary leadership.
