ICSSR Sponsored National Seminar on "Breaking the Silence: Mental Health and Well-Being in Modern Society

Moran Mahila Mahavidyalaya hosted a two-day ICSSR (New Delhi) sponsored National Seminar on "Breaking the Silence: Mental Health and Well-Being in Modern Society" on March 27-28, 2025. The seminar served as a vital platform for discussions on mental health awareness, addressing stigma and advocating for stronger mental health policies.

The inaugural session was chaired by social scientist Prof. Girin Phukon, National Fellow, ICSSR (New Delhi). Dr. Tarun Gogoi, Principal of Moran Mahila Mahavidyalaya, delivered the welcome address, followed by the inaugural speech by Prof. Debi Chatterjee, Retired Professor of Jadavpur University, Kolkata. The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Neeta Kalita Barua, Dean, Faculty of Education, Dibrugarh University. She emphasized the urgent need to challenge societal silence on mental health, highlighting how stigma and misinformation prevent individuals from seeking help. She also underscored the importance of incorporating mental health education into schools and workplaces, improving mental health infrastructure such as setting up of mental health counselling centers and fostering self-compassion and community support.

The event saw the participation of principals, vice-principals and faculty members from prominent institutions such as Moran College, Moran Commerce College, Khowang College, Hem Chandra Dev Goswami College and Borpathar College. Eminent academicians, media representatives, local dignitaries and a good number of alumni and students also graced the occasion.

On the second day, two parallel technical sessions were chaired by Dr. Pranjal Buragohain and Dr. Lakhipriya Gogoi of Dibrugarh University and put forward certain vital inputs on mental health issues. Over the two days, more than 50 research papers were presented across six technical sessions in hybrid mode. Scholars from leading institutions, including Jawaharlal Nehru University (New Delhi), IIT Jodhpur, Montford College (Bangalore), Sikkim University, various universities and colleges of North East India, contributed their thought-provoking research papers and enriched discussions on key mental health issues.

The seminar brought together academicians, researchers and experts across India, fostering meaningful dialogue on mental health challenges and its solutions. Joint coordinators Dr. Rima Kotaky and Hunali Mech expressed their sincere gratitude to all resource persons, academicians, participants and well-wishers for their support in making the seminar a successful one.
